Join North American Indian Center of Boston at the Loring Greenough House as we dive into the legacy of the enslavement of Black and Indigenous peoples and the work of confronting white supremacy in public art and spaces.
We will have a book talk with Irvin Weathersby, author of In Open Contempt: White Supremacy in Art and Public Spaces. This will be followed by a screening of the short film Written Out of History by Max Carocci and Simona Piantieri. To be followed by a Q&A with community members.
This event coincides with the temporary installation of “Hope Out of Darkness” a sculpture of Solomon Northup co-hosted by North American Indian Center of Boston and Rose Kennedy Greenway. NAICOB is a curatorial partner for the Mayor’s Office of Arts and Culture “Un-monument | Re-monument | De-monument” project.
Join us for a community workday at Franklin Park! Join the Parks and Recreation Department’s Urban Wild Division to learn about the ecology of Boston’s largest green space and help as we remove invasive plants and clean up the Long Crouch Woods.
This natural area is home to beautiful rock outcrops, heritage trees, and attractions like the Bear Dens. However, it needs our help to stay healthy and remain an important park for us and future generations. We hope that by bringing people together to work towards restoring the ecological health of the Long Crouch Woods, we can showcase this area's beauty and potential.
The focus of the event is to remove invasive understory plants, cleanup trash from the site, and build habitat walls with the brush generated, all of which are done to improve overall forest health and increase visibility into the woods. There will be lots of learning opportunities for residents of all ages and backgrounds.
Staff will provide all the tools, supplies, and instruction needed for the project. Please dress in weather-appropriate, comfortable clothes that you are okay with getting dirty, as well as closed-toe shoes. We recommend participants bring their own water, snacks, sunscreen, and bug spray.
The event will happen, rain or shine. We will cancel in the case of extreme weather such as thunderstorms.
We encourage you to bike, walk, or take public transit, but there will be parking available via entry from the Zoo's rear parking lot (see below).
Expect to be utilizing hand cutting tools like loppers and pruners, moving brush, raking, and maybe even kneeling/crouching. We would also love to hear your ideas for future projects!
3 Lawndale Terrace, a two-family on a 5,017 square foot lot, will be gut-renovated with a 2,500 square foot addition into six units, four units with two bedrooms and two bathrooms and two units with one bedroom and one bathroom. Plan includes four off-street parking spaces, a new curb cut/driveway, upgraded fencing and landscaping.
