March is Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month

This month, we explore events and organizations promoting disability awareness and how to support the disabled community.

Individuals who live with developmental disabilities, a term that covers many conditions listed here by the CDC, often face many challenges.  Society has in modern times worked slowly and haltingly to accommodate the needs of those with  disabilities and to improve their quality of life.   The Americans with Disabilities Act is still the largest culmination of those efforts in the United States. A historic and long fought movement for a series of laws and accommodations which forbid discrimination in employment, services and more for those with developmental On February 26, 1987 National Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month was proclaimed, calling for all people to help persons with disabilities to lead productive and fulfilling lives, and to remove barriers in doing so.   This month we wished to share some city resources and event calendars to raise awareness and encourage contributions and donations to organizations that serve those in need.

 

  • The Masachussets Department of Devleopmental Services is the central state resource advocating for and serving those with mental and physical disabilities.  Their site features resources, applications for further support, and more.  
  • The City of Boston’s Disability’s Commission works to serve Boston’s disabled community and maintain the important standards set by the ADA. Their web page is a portal of resources, services and permits offered by the city, news, and more information.
  • This post by National Today provides more information and facts about the history of how we label disabilities and the history of the ADA.  
  • This event calendar shows ongoing and future events and activities aimed at children with disabilities in the Massachusetts area.  
  • The State of Massachusetts website offers this extensive list of organizations, advocates, and services for individuals with disability, on subjects ranging from education, to housing and more.
