Project Information
Andrew Square is a gateway to South Boston, a transit hub, and a residential and local business district. It is a complicated intersection where six streets converge. Andrew Square is on our high-crash network and we are prioritizing investment here to develop a design that:
- reflects community priorities
- creates a better experience for all users, and
- supports our growing neighborhood.
This project is funded by an Implementation Grant from the Federal Highway Administration’s Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) program.
About Andrew Square Safety Project
SHARED VISION FOR ANDREW SQUARE
Based on shared priorities we’ve heard from community members, we have established a framework to guide this redesign. Our goals are to:
- Create a safer and more comfortable experience for people walking
- Ensure safe and reliable access to and from the Andrew Square MBTA station
- Develop clearer, safer, and more efficient paths of travel for car, bus, and truck traffic
WHY NOW?
South Boston residents previously identified Andrew Square as a high priority during the PLAN: South Boston Dorchester Avenue Transportation Plan.
Now, we have funding to develop a new design. We are kicking off community engagement this spring and look forward to hearing your goals. We will work with you to refine the design at every step of the process.

Your Concept Design Feedback
We are excited to share some options for improving safety at Andrew Square. We developed four design options that each address the concerns we heard from you:
- the intersection feels confusing and unsafe, and
- people often avoid it or cut through neighborhood streets rather than crossing directly.

Community Engagement
We hosted an in-person Design Workshop to share the four different design options we are exploring for the future of Andrew Square. We reviewed how each design option addresses your concerns about the intersection's current design.
After presenting those designs, we broke out into smaller group discussions. Community members shared their feedback on design tradeoffs with our facilitators. To close out the meeting, we shared that feedback with the rest of the attendees.
The City hosted a virtual public meeting to kick off the Andrew Square Safety Project. We introduced the project background and purpose and shared what we're learning about the intersection.
Through live polls, we confirmed that attendees' experiences match the data we've explored and learned about people's concerns and priorities in Andrew Square. We also listened to what people think are the most important safety issues in Andrew Square and what kinds of design improvements they would like to see.
