Publishing for the 250th anniversary of the United States, When the Declaration of Independence Was News focuses on the nation’s founding document at the moment of its creation in 1776, before anyone knew what the legacy of the Declaration would be or if the United States would win the war against Great Britain. It explores how the Declaration was communicated to people in the new nation and around the Atlantic world and reveals the stories of the many people involved in the process of declaring independence, from printers to soldiers to diplomats to translators. About the Speaker: Dr. Emily Sneff is an early American historian and leading expert on the Declaration of Independence. She earned her Ph.D. in History from William & Mary. She is a consulting curator for exhibitions marking the 250th anniversary of the Declaration at the Museum of the American Revolution and Historic Trappe.

Combined workshop: Road Readiness (Level 3) & Street Skills (Level 4)

two side by side photos showing groups of adults learning intermediate biking skills

Our experienced staff and volunteers will help each participant gain skills and confidence so you’re ready to venture onto the street and keep on rolling! This class is open to people of all genders. Participants in this workshop will be split into two groups:

Level 3 participants will mostly stay in the parking lot and work on the skills, such as the ability to start pedaling without wobbling or having to push a lot with the foot, ability to ride steadily in a straight path, getting more comfortable shifting gears in response to changes in speed and topography, comfort riding with the seat raised up close to hip height, and ability to go up and down a curb ramp.

With Level 4 participants we’ll ride as a group on streets with low-speed traffic, learning how to start and stop safely at traffic signals, ride a safe distance from parked cars and moving vehicles, communicate with other road users, and make turns at intersections. The objective of this workshop is to gain more advanced skills, such as signaling while biking, awareness of door range and a safe riding position in the roadway, ability to ride in a predictable path, and overall confidence being on the street.

If you cannot yet ride independently across a parking lot, please do not register for this clinic. Our Basic Skills class is more appropriate.
