Residency Requirements for City Employees
Learn more about the residency requirement you need to meet to work for the City of Boston.
Anyone can apply to work for the City, but you must be a resident of Boston by your first day of work. The City passed an ordinance in 1994 requiring all workers to show proof of residency each year.
Proof of Boston residency must be submitted to your department annually. If proof of residency is required and not provided, your department will consider it a voluntary termination. You must remain a resident for the entire length of your work with the City, unless the position has a residency waiver from the Residency Compliance Commission or specific requirements are met that are outlined in applicable Collective Bargaining Agreements with our unions.
For more details about the requirement, read the ordinance in Section 5-5.3 of the City of Boston Municipal Code.
