About the City of Boston’s Salary Plans:

Every City position is assigned a salary plan that defines its pay range. Salary plans are structured using grades and steps:

Grades identify the overall pay range for a position based on its level of responsibility compared to other City jobs.
Steps represent incremental pay increases within a grade. An employee's step placement within the grade reflects their relevant experience, education, and expertise. Employees typically advance to the next step until reaching the maximum step for their grade.

Our Labor Context

Many of the City’s salary plans are established through Collective Bargaining Agreements (CBAs) negotiated with our labor unions. These CBAs outline salary plans, scheduled pay increases, and other employment terms. Together with the unions, the City periodically revisits CBA terms through negotiations.
