The task force will help the Mayor and the City of Boston on healing racial inequities for descendants of slavery.

Boston Reparations Task Force: Studying the Past, Shaping the Future

About the Task Force

The commission was established through a 2022 City Council ordinance and appointed by Mayor Wu. The task force is made up of ten members, including two youth voices.

The Task Force on Reparations will focus on:

  1. Working with a research partner to release a study on the legacy of slavery in Boston and its impact on descendants today
  2. Engaging the community throughout the process to include input from lived experience
  3. Providing recommendations to the Mayor for reparative justice solutions for Black residents

2026 Updates

The Reparations Task Force continues to move forward in its work to examine the historical and present-day impacts of slavery and systemic harm in Boston.

Following internal review of the research reports, the Task Force will begin a structured community feedback process designed to ensure residents have meaningful opportunities to understand the findings and contribute their voices. Community conversations will help inform how Boston considers repair, acknowledgment, and future policy action.

In the coming months, the Task Force will:

  • Continue review and discussion of the combined research reports
  • Finalize selection of an independent economist to support analysis
  • Welcome newly sworn-in Task Force members
  • Launch community briefings and public engagement activities
  • Prepare recommendations for the Mayor based on research, analysis, and community input

The Task Force remains committed to conducting this work thoughtfully and responsibly, recognizing both the historical significance of the effort and the importance of building trust through an open and inclusive process.
