The Urban Wilds Program welcomes residents to join a hands-on event to improve the Dale Street entrance and trail at Sherrin Woods Urban Wild. This event comes one year after the City officially protected the land, which was possible thanks to long-term efforts from residents, the Dale Street Neighborhood Watch, the Southwest Boston Community Development Corporation (SWBCDC), and many others. Now that this forest is protected from development, Urban Wilds staff and the SWBCDC's Green Team have made significant progress toward making this entrance and trail safe, welcoming, and green.

Please join us to continue work on trail improvements, trash cleanup, invasive plant removal, and other potential projects in the woods. Volunteers can expect to use hand tools such as shovels, pick mattocks (like a pickaxe), loppers, rakes, and other landscaping tools. Tasks with these tools will involve standing, walking, and for those who are able, crouching down, digging, picking up and carrying various materials, and other common tasks associated with gardening and landscaping.

No experience necessary! Urban Wilds staff will provide tools, work gloves, and instructions. You are welcome to bring your own work gloves and tools.

Please be sure to bring water, sturdy footwear, and clothes for working outdoors.

This natural area is home to beautiful rock outcrops, heritage trees, and attractions like the Bear Dens. However, it needs our help to stay healthy and remain an important park for us and future generations. We hope that by bringing people together to work towards restoring the ecological health of the Long Crouch Woods, we can showcase this area's beauty and potential.

Register Today

The focus of the event is to remove invasive understory plants, cleanup trash from the site, and build habitat walls with the brush generated, all of which are done to improve overall forest health and increase visibility into the woods. There will be lots of learning opportunities for residents of all ages and backgrounds.

Staff will provide all the tools, supplies, and instruction needed for the project. Please dress in weather-appropriate, comfortable clothes that you are okay with getting dirty, as well as closed-toe shoes. We recommend participants bring their own water, snacks, sunscreen, and bug spray.

The event will happen, rain or shine. We will cancel in the case of extreme weather such as thunderstorms.

We encourage you to bike, walk, or take public transit, but there will be parking available via entry from the Zoo's rear parking lot (see below).

Expect to be utilizing hand cutting tools like loppers and pruners, moving brush, raking, and maybe even kneeling/crouching. We would also love to hear your ideas for future projects!
